For the past three months, I have been having issues with Reddit on my iPhone. Actively viewing videos or photos for extended periods causes Reddit to slow down and ultimately crash. Besides, the phone starts to warm up, indicating that Reddit is consuming significant resources.
When I searched the web, the problem appeared more widespread than I thought, and most of the affected users are running iOS 18.3. Since neither of the two, Apple or Reddit, have officially acknowledged the problem so far, we can’t be certain if it’s a specific app or iOS version to blame.
Why the Reddit app keeps crashing on iPhone?
- Bug in the installed version of Reddit or iOS
- Phone is running low on storage
- Running too many videos is stressing your iPhone
- You have an active content blocker or VPN
- The Reddit app cache is corrupt

What can I do when Reddit is crashing on iPhone?
1. Turn off Background App Refresh for Reddit
Open Settings on your iPhone > go to General > scroll down and tap on Background App Refresh > then turn off the toggle next to Reddit.

While disabling background app refresh may not fix things if Reddit keeps crashing in iOS 18.3 on iPhone, it will certainly delay the crash. I have tried this workaround and it helps use Reddit for extended periods before the inevitable crash!
2. Turn off Autoplay Video Previews
Open Reddit > tap on your profile (avatar) icon near the top-right corner > select Settings > go to Media and animations under Accessibility > and choose Never under Autoplay Video Previews.

If you find Reddit crashing on iPhone when scrolling through a lot of video content on a subreddit, disabling autoplay for videos will do the trick on iOS 18.
3. Disable any active content blocker or VPN
In the past, many users have reported that an active content blocker or VPN is the reason the Reddit app crashes on iPhones.
If you use any such app, say Proton VPN, disable it, then launch Reddit and check for improvements!
4. Update Reddit and iOS
If there’s a bug in the installed version of Reddit or iOS that is causing the former to crash, updating it should install the relevant patch. I would like to reiterate that a bug hasn’t been acknowledged as of March 21, 2025.
To update Reddit, open the App Store on your iPhone > search for Reddit > and tap on Update if a newer version is available.

To update iOS, open Settings > go to General > select Software Update > and tap on Update Now if a newer version is available.

5. Reinstall Reddit
When nothing else works, the last option is to reinstall Reddit. This will delete the corrupted app cache and clear out any inconsistencies that crept in during the previous installation.
To reinstall Reddit, open Settings on your iPhone > select General > go to iPhone Storage > locate and choose Reddit > tap on Delete App > confirm the change > go to Reddit on the App Store > tap on Get > and once the app is reinstalled, check for improvements.

With one of these solutions, you should no longer find Reddit crashing on iPhone. For me, disabling Background App Refresh and Autoplay Video Previews did the trick. So, try those first and then move on to the other solutions.
Also, here’s something interesting. While searching for solutions on Google, when I entered the query, the first page was populated with Reddit results because the query included the word “Reddit“. Honestly, this move by Google irritates me to the core. If you, too, feel the same way, learn how to exclude Reddit from Google search results!
