Just recently, I realized that grouped photos or videos were not opening in WhatsApp on my iPhone 13. While I could tap on the group and view them all, opening an individual picture or video didn’t work!
This affected my iPhone 13 and iPhone 16, while a Google Pixel in the household showed no similar signs, indicating the problem was limited to WhatsApp for iOS.
I am someone who doesn’t regularly check for updates and these are usually auto-installed. So, identifying if there was a bug in the latest app version was another challenge. But after suffering for a few days, I was finally able to get rid of it and managed to open grouped photos and videos on WhatsApp. Here’s how!
How I got WhatsApp to open grouped photos and videos on iPhone?
1. Update WhatsApp from the App Store
Open the App Store on your iPhone > search for WhatsApp > tap the Update button > relaunch WhatsApp > check for improvements.
Remember, you might only see an update for WhatsApp upon going to the app page and not the dedicated Updates section on the App Store. At least, that’s what happened to me and many others. So, do it this way!
Also, if you don’t install the WhatsApp update for too long, it will be auto-downloaded by the App Store.
2. Restart your iPhone
If there are no updates available for WhatsApp, consider restarting the iPhone. This will help when the changes are not fully applied after an auto-update. Once check, whether WhatsApp is now opening grouped photos and videos on your iPhone.
3. Reinstall WhatsApp
Open Settings on your iPhone > go to General > tap on Storage > select WhatsApp > tap on Delete app > choose Delete in the confirmation prompt > restart iPhone > reinstall WhatsApp from the App Store.
Reinstall also helps when Reddit keeps crashing on your iPhone.
Once done, you will no longer find WhatsApp not opening grouped photos on iPhone. The problem will be gone for good.
Unless the developers behind WhatsApp make another mistake and reintroduce the bug. But even in that case, a patch should be out soon!
