In the last year, I have seen several changes to Similarweb, which surely affected the experience but not dramatically. Meanwhile, some users reported that Similarweb is not accessible, other found it not working, while a few said that Similarweb displayed incorrect data for websites.
Similarweb is one the most reliable online tool to gain insights and performance metrics into a website. It’s often used to analyze the performance of competitors. And when Similarweb stops working, you will have a major crisis at hand.
Fret not, the issue can be resolved for most using the solutions listed next!
What can I do when Similarweb is not working?
1. Verify that the website has enough traffic
When Similarweb tells you, “Looks like there’s not enough data here,” it means that the website doesn’t have much traffic. For Similarweb to determine the numbers, there must be at least 5000+ visits.

This is usually the case with new websites or the ones that rank very low on Google and Bing. Such websites don’t get enough traffic and, as a result, Similarweb can’t determine the visits to them from its sources.
2. Change the DNS address on your PC
- Press Windows + S to open the Search menu, type View network connections, and click on the relevant result.
- Right-click on the active network adapter and select Properties. The active adapter is the one that is being used for Internet access.
- Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and click on Properties.
- Select Use the following DNS server addresses, and enter this in the fields underneath:
- Preferred DNS server: 8 . 8 . 8 . 8
- Alternate DNS server: 8 . 8 . 4 . 4
- Finally, tick the checkbox for Validate settings upon exit, and click OK.

I have used Google’s Public DNS due to its reliability, but if a different one works better for you, try that. Also, another reason I went with Google’s DNS is that when I was unable to access Similarweb for a brief period, configuring this DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) fixed things!
3. Clear the browsing data
- Open the web browser used to access Similarweb, and press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
- Now, select All time from the Time range dropdown menu, tick the checkboxes for Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files, and then click on Delete data.
- Once done, relaunch the browser and verify whether Similarweb starts working or not.
4. Install the Similarweb browser extension
If the official Similarweb website is not working, you can install the Similarweb browser extension from Chrome Web Store. After adding the extension, pin it to the toolbar.
Now, whenever you visit any website that’s tracked by Similarweb, simply click on the Similarweb extension’s icon, and it will list all the insights.

Also, hovering the cursor over the Similarweb extenion’s icon will tell you the website’s global ranking based on visits.
5. Set up Google Analytics or Google Search Console (GSC)
If nothing else works and you own the domain/property for which Similarweb is not working or showing inaccurate results, I recommend setting up Google Search Console or Google Analytics.
In my experience, Google Search Console (GSC) is more user friendly and should be the first choice if you need just the basic insights into visits or the website’s performance in general.
Google Analytics, on the other hand, comprises of an advanced set of tools that lets you identify how visitors interact with your website.
Most of the time, I stick with GSC for visit-related information about my website although I have Google Analytics set up. The latter will come into the picture once I plan to monetize the website.
Is Similar not free anymore?
Similarweb was never entirely free. It earlier allowed you to access deep insights into a website, but most of this data is now included in the paid subscriptions.
For instance, Similarweb previously allowed you check a website’s quarterly traffic for free, but it’s now limited to a single month. For the quarterly data, you will have to sign up for a paid subscription. Also, the Similarweb extension lets you check insights for free only 25 times a week!
Planning to get a paid subscription? You can check out all available plans on the official Similarweb website.
That’s all for today! I hope the solutions here helped you fix things when Similarweb is not working. In case the problem persists, contact the official Similarweb support for more help.
Before you leave, find out how long it takes to build a website and get it to the monetization stage!
