Similarweb Extension Not Working: 5 Easy Fixes

When you find the Similarweb extension not working in Chrome, Brave, or Opera, it’s mostly the stored browsing data, DNS configuration, server downtimes, and geo-blocking to blame.

Remember, if you are checking visits for a website with minimal or no traffic, the Similarweb extension may show incorrect data or not show any details at all. Similarweb works best for websites with 5000+ monthly visits. Although, I still find Similarweb unreliable!

What can I do when Similarweb extension is not working?

1. Clear the browsing data

  1. Launch the browser where Similarweb is installed and press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
  2. Select All time from the dropdown menu, tick the checkboxes for Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files, and then click on Delete data. delete browsing data
  3. Once done, relaunch the browser and verify whether the Similarweb extension starts working.

2. Change the DNS server

  1. Press Windows + S to open Search, type View network connections, and click on the relevant result.
  2. Right-click on the active network adapter, be it Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and select Properties.
  3. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list, and click on Properties.
  4. Now, choose Use the following DNS server addresses, and enter the following in the fields underneath:
    • Preferred DNS server: 8 . 8 . 8 . 8
    • Alternate DNS server: 8 . 8 . 4 . 4
  5. Finally, tick the checkbox for Validate settings upon exit, and click OK.

I used Google’s Public DNS when I found the Similarweb extension not working, and this fixed things. Though, you can try DNS server addresses from other providers like Cloudflare.

3. Use a VPN

If the previous solutions didn’t work, consider using a top-rated VPN to bypass any local restrictions on access to Similarweb. Often, authorities block websites like these without any prior notification.

I recently came across reports of the Similarweb extension not working in Pakistan and that the Similarweb extension was removed from the Chrome Web Store.

In such cases, using a VPN solution like Proton VPN will help bypass this geo-blocking. I recommend Proton VPN because its free version works well and offers sufficient servers.
