When you find the Similarweb extension not working in Chrome, Brave, or Opera, it’s mostly the stored browsing data, DNS configuration, server downtimes, and geo-blocking to blame.

What can I do when Similarweb extension is not working?
1. Clear the browsing data
- Launch the browser where Similarweb is installed and press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
- Select All time from the dropdown menu, tick the checkboxes for Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files, and then click on Delete data.
- Once done, relaunch the browser and verify whether the Similarweb extension starts working.
2. Change the DNS server
- Press Windows + S to open Search, type View network connections, and click on the relevant result.
- Right-click on the active network adapter, be it Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and select Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list, and click on Properties.
- Now, choose Use the following DNS server addresses, and enter the following in the fields underneath:
- Preferred DNS server: 8 . 8 . 8 . 8
- Alternate DNS server: 8 . 8 . 4 . 4
- Finally, tick the checkbox for Validate settings upon exit, and click OK.
I used Google’s Public DNS when I found the Similarweb extension not working, and this fixed things. Though, you can try DNS server addresses from other providers like Cloudflare.
3. Use a VPN
If the previous solutions didn’t work, consider using a top-rated VPN to bypass any local restrictions on access to Similarweb. Often, authorities block websites like these without any prior notification.
I recently came across reports of the Similarweb extension not working in Pakistan and that the Similarweb extension was removed from the Chrome Web Store.
In such cases, using a VPN solution like Proton VPN will help bypass this geo-blocking. I recommend Proton VPN because its free version works well and offers sufficient servers.
4. Reinstall the Similarweb extension

- Restart the PC to apply the changes.
- Now, go to the Chrome Web Store and click on Add to Chrome to reinstall the Similarweb extension.
